The National Museum of Murals and Mosaics Inc., established as a non-profit corporate entity in 2005 functions as the leading electronic repository of public art. It is a “virtual” museum available to the public all day and everyday of the year. A primary goal of the museum is to develop a world class collection of public art utilizing state of the art technology for collection, storage, dissemination and preservation. Museum exhibitions both electronic and traveling will present a comprehensive and educational experience for visitors, both amateur and professional. Museum visitors access its growing collection without cost or fees of any kind. Because the museum exists on the internet it is available worldwide only requiring access to a computer with internet capability.
- The museum will extend and expand knowledge about and provide for the documentation of public art that exists in various settings throughout the world.
- The museum will dramatically increase access to public art that is only accessible to limited populations due to geographic constraints.
- The museum will offer scholars, students, educators, preservationists and others interested in public art opportunity to conduct research and also to share their research.
- A crucial goal of the museum will be to function as the archive of public art especially for those works that by their very nature are impermanent. This will be accomplished by digitizing, cataloging and preserving images.
- The museum will develop formal programs to provide on-site education to various segments of the public with particular emphasis on elementary and secondary pupils, art students, and others interested in obtaining greater understanding of public art. This will be accomplished by transportable electronic exhibits and will be facilitated by museum staff with curatorial and public art training and knowledge.
